The greater the struggle, the more glorious the triumph

The butterfly circus is an award winning short film, portraying the life of a handicapped man. Will, who was born without limbs, works at a sideshow when he is discovered by the showman for the Butterfly Circus. In contrast to the majority, the showman appreciates Will’s beauty, encouraging him to look past his “disadvantages” and find a greater purpose in life.

First, the importance of giving life a meaning is very significant in the Butterfly Circus. All characters in the film had found themselves in difficult situation at one point, but they were given a second chance by the showman. Despite the film being short, the message is clear. Most people have problems, but there is no reason to let that ruin life. Even though Will had all odds against him, he chose to fight. Instead of looking at himself as a freak and an incomplete man, destined to be an attraction at a sideshow, he started to believe in himself and his abilities. With the help of his friends from the Butterfly Circus, he learned that he should not always depend on the aid from others, he had to try to do things himself. Even though it was a struggle, Will pulled through and became a permanent part of the circus, giving life a whole new meaning.

Likewise to the character Will, the actor portraying him, Nick Vujicic, fought hard to turn his life around. At the age of 10 he tried, unsuccessfully, to commit suicide (Fifa World Cup, 2012). Even though he was born without limbs, and in that way stood out from the masses, he managed in time to change his attitude towards life. Nick Vujicic is now a person who does not let his handicap define him in a bad way. As a matter of fact, he is traveling around, telling teenagers and adults about his story and what life has to offer. The parallel between Nick Vujicic as a person and the short film the Butterfly Circus is, therefore, that they both focus on the importance of believing in yourself, and not giving up.

To conclude, the Butterfly Circus is a film about finding opportunities in every situation, no matter how difficult it might seem. Life has a strange way of testing people, whether it is with a congenital disease or a problem later on, it is important to try to stay positive. Individuals like Nick, and his character Will, are sources of inspiration to us all. They show us that it is important to look for the light at the end of the tunnel, because the greater the struggle, the more glorious the triumph. (Weigel, 2009)

  1. I liked that you wrote about the movie AND Nick Vujicic 🙂 The only thing I didn’t like was that you wrote ”life of a different man”. I would rather write life of a disabled or handicaped man:)
